The service enhancement expands both HSPA and LTE coverage. The hardware is meant to blend in where necessary, but the small cells allow coverage in areas where geography posed a challenge, or where office space suffers from structural obstacles.
This is not the first time that AT&T has used DAS technology, but it is the first time the carrier has installed them outdoors and indoors on this scale. The coverage boost is obviously a benefit to subscribers. According to AT&T, the boost in coverage has resulted in high marks for voice and data reliability. Also, customers are taking advantage of the extra coverage as AT&T is noting a better than 10-times increase in voice and data traffic.
